Day of the Dead: Bloodline

Bite me!

Even if the actors aren’t really good, the plot is plausible (for a zombie movie): A patient being treated for hormonal imbalance doesn’t turn entirely into a zombie. Identifying the right hormone holds the key to the vaccine…

The strong point of Day of the Dead Bloodline is its relentless action, from the first scene to the last, the movie barely slows down. There’s no place for overstretched emotional scenes, they didn’t try to seduce the fans of dramas.

Even if it’s inspired by Romero, we’re far from the quality of his original movies (especially knowing that Day of the Dead was already not his best). However, if you’re into zombies and you’re not too picky, you should enjoy Bloodline.

Trick ‘r Treat

The time has finally come, Chris and I are at the beginning of our three weeks autumn holidays. We’ve been counting down to this moment for almost a year so, let the spooky time begin!

Last night we kicked off our favourite season with a re-run of Trick ‘r Treat. This movie is one of my favourite Halloween themed stories ever created. It may not be the most scary of all, but it captures the spirit of Halloween perfectly.

Instead of writing a review or something like that, here are some fun facts I’ve found about the movie:

  • Characters from each story are frequently seen in the background of stories they are not involved with. This is to help piece together the chronology of the movie.
  • Most of the Jack O’ Lanterns were made out of either foam or ceramic. An on-set joke was that no pumpkins were harmed during the making of this movie.
  • Little people were used to fill in for kids trick or treating, since this film was shot mainly at night and real kids could not work these hours.
  • Anna Paquin’s character “Laurie” is named after Laurie Strode from the 1978 Halloween film.

And, that’s it folks! Cheers to the most creepy and spooky 2019 Halloween holidays!

Halloween 2019

It’s holiday time! Every year, Inge and I wait for October before taking any day off. It’s a long wait but, when it finally starts, we get a few weeks around Halloween and nearly a month for Christmas.

We’re not fans of travels… Home is where it happens for us. We load our PCs and consoles with games, we keep the good TV shows, we prepare a list of movies (entirely horror around Halloween), and we get comic books. In short, we become geek hermits for a few weeks.

So, expect a lot of posts in the coming weeks because I’ll finally be doing my stuff without having to deal with that nightmare they call real life.

The Conjuring

Sardoken

I don’t want to enter the debate about the truth behind the Warren case files. I believe in atoms, biology and chemistry, I don’t believe that something unexplainable, guided by evil forces, lurks in the dark.

But, as strong as my belief in science can be, movies like The Conjuring or The Exorcist make me feel uneasy. When those movies are over and I need to bravely cross my apartment at night, I usually bring my flashlight with me.

But that’s what I’m asking for, a scary feeling that lasts for a little while, until my brain takes over, and The Conjuring delivers just that.

Of course, the scenes are well done and the tension is build perfectly, but it wouldn’t work as well if the casting wasn’t as flawless. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson are absolutely fantastic and both give the movie the level of seriousness that makes you think “and what if it was all true?”. From the moment that the thought enters your mind, the movie has done its job, the door to your logical brain is open and the fear can take over.

So, fact or fiction? Does it matter when it’s quality entertainment?

We had planned to watch “El Camino” last night, but when we saw that The Conjuring was available on Netflix, we changed our minds. It’s October, and we don’t need a lot of excuses to opt for a horror movie if we can, even if it’s a re-run.

I know that I’ve already seen this movie a few years ago, yet I was still as terrified as the first time I’ve watched it. Most movies loose the element of surprise once you’ve seen them. The Conjuring, however, still kept me on the border of my seat until the end. Absolutely bonechilling!

Apparently, Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga (who portray Ed & Lorraine Warren) traveled all the way to Connecticut before filming began, where they spent time with the real Lorraine Warren. They wanted to learn about her long-running paranormal career in order to make the film as authentic as possible.

I also read somewhere that the production was plagued by spooky happenings, but I don’t know whether I believe these stories or not. Could be a great publicity stunt to attract more viewers.

Anyway, true story or not, The Conjuring scares the living hell out of me! Perfect for a Saturday horror night.

Big Trouble in Little China

Everyone has this one movie they like to watch when they feel down or under the weather. Mine is Big Trouble in Little China.

A rough-and-tumble trucker helps rescue his friend’s fiance from an ancient sorcerer in a supernatural battle beneath Chinatown. – IMDb

The movie came out in 1986, I was 10 at that time, we’re 34 years later (this really doesn’t make me feel old ;p), and I still love it as much. While some movies age badly, “Big Trouble in Little China” still looks as great as when I’ve first watched it. A real 80’s classic if you ask me.

Kurt Russell who plays the role of Jack Burton is a true 80’s icon with a killing sense of humour. Here are some of my favourite quotes:

Jack Burton: Okay. You people sit tight, hold the fort and keep the home fires burning. And if we’re not back by dawn… call the president.

Jack Burton: Everybody relax, I’m here.

A perfect movie to grab some popcorn and relax because John Carpenter is about to take you on one hell of a ride.

Blizzard’s Backlash

Cataclysm was the first time I was disappointed by Blizzard. So many of my favourite zones were ruined by Deathwing and the new zones were not as great as Storm Peaks, Teldrassil or Shadowmoon Valley… By wanting to do too much, they had lost something.

Diablo 3 was released and it was crippled by the real money auction house. Instead of giving more love to the games that I was playing, they started creating more franchises that I didn’t care about. That’s when I’ve lost the connection I had with the company.

Their fanbase changed and I had less and less the feeling to belong in the community, only to a small part of it.

Those criticisms come from my own experience with their products. Unlike the criticisms that are turned against their behaviour as a company.

People got mad over the layoffs at Blizzard, then they were angry at them for banning a Hearthstone player who broke the rules of his contract.

First, I find it not my place to judge the behaviour of the company regarding the way they handle their management. If they need to do cuts in the staff, it’s their duty to do so.

Second, regarding the Hearthstone player, why is there a rule in the contract that says that players cannot state political opinions? Not because we should all hold hands together and sing songs, but specifically to avoid the kind of situations where you force a company to pick side, at the eventual expense of a part of their market.

Why do people get so mad? I believe that the backlash is very emotional because Blizzard build its success on creating a community of fans. They were the good guys, the geeks making games for the geeks.

I will never forget Chris Metzen’s speech during the Blizzcon 2010.

It’s not because Blizzard is now seen as a corporation instead of a bunch a cool dudes making games that there are no more cool dudes at Blizzard. They are still there and they probably have the same opinions as us, but they also know when to leave the business aside and focus on the real reason why we are all here: live epic adventures.

Diablo remains the Hack’n Slash franchise I’ve played the most in my life and is only second to World of Warcraft when it comes to the amount of hours I already spent in a game. To me, that’s what matters and that’s why I’ll continue playing Blizzard games as long as I have fun.

Big Bang Theory – The End

A lot has happened since the first episode, but the biggest surprise from the TV show finale was to see Penny walking out of the repaired elevator.

Sure, seeing Sheldon acknowledge his friends instead of his own greatness while receiving the Nobel price was something… But I was so used to see everyone using the stairs, I forgot there even was an elevator.

Anyway, Inge and I were both sad to see the end of a show that brought us so many laughters, for so many years. I already miss them.

American Poltergeist

Last Saturday night, Chris and I had a few beers and thought it would be a great idea to watch this movie on Netflix. This was a mistake!

American Poltergeist is so bad, my man fell asleep beside me after the first few minutes of the movie. This must be the biggest insult a movie can get because Chris only falls asleep during movies that are absolutely not worth to watch.

I wouldn’t even know where to start if I would have to describe this movie. The acting was atrocious, the effects even worse, and let’s not even get me started about the story!

Note to self; I made this post, so I would never forget not to watch any movie of this serie again! I can’t believe that there are more than one movies of American Poltergeist while real good quality shows or movies get cancelled for far less.

Anyway, rant over and out.

In The Tall Grass

Sardoken

A rainy Sunday afternon, candelights, my wife, me… And a Netflix movie.

I was afraid to have seen most of the story in the trailer, but there’s more in this Stephen King inspired movie than just a few people getting lost in tall grass.

There are so many ways that this movie could have turned bad, but it didn’t. Instead of going non-sensical and heavy, the movie managed to keep moving in the same direction and led us to a satisying ending.

The casting was good, but Patrick Wilson, by showing another face than the mister nice guy from The Conjuring, was excellent. Even though, his acting skills were not able to top the real vilain of the movie: the monolith. Never a piece of rock had felt as threatening.

Certainly not my horror movie of the year, but probably part of my top list of 2019.

Soforah

And the award for best performance goes to: the tall grass… No seriously, the movie was pretty good, better than I expected after having read the bad reviews.

It was dark, cold and rainy last Sunday, we (my husband and I) had no game installed and felt like watching some TV. I remembered having seen the trailer for “In the Tall Grass” on Netflix and, thought why not watch this? So, a Stephen King story it was.

We lit up some candles and snuggled in the couch while the rain was tapping on the window, and people were getting lost in tall grass on our screen. The reason why I speak so few about this movie is that it’s more about the entire moment. It’s one of my favourites, and no matter the quality of the movie, it will always be bound to an unforgettable Sunday afternoon.
