Cobra Kai – Season 3

I love Cobra Kai so much, I could binge 72 hours and still want more. Johnny is the best (and has always been), Larusso is a whiner (and has always been) and Kreese is a PTSDed war veteran who shouldn’t be allowed around kids (and has always been).

Spoiler Alert

I’m not going to debate about who’s right and who’s wrong. To be honest, kids shouldn’t be taught to fight outside of dojos (they should be playing D&D together instead), but that’s not the point of this post. Season 3 makes 2 very important points:

  1. It’s about time that Johnny and Daniel get together to fight Kreese, who’s always been the real enemy;
  2. It’s put in evidence that Larusso has always been the guy who steals the girlfriends and I’m so glad that Johnny would have been the one who would have ended up with nowadays Elisabeth Shue (who is still very cute), if he wouldn’t already have been with Miguel’s mum. It was awesome to see Johnny and Ali spend a day together at the street fair, he so deserved it. I know, I’m a big soapy dude.

Real Detective

Real Detective is about real-life detectives and the true cases that consume and haunt them. Every detective has one. A case that pushes them to the brink. A case that takes hold of them and won’t let go. (source: IMDB)

Every Sunday at lunch, we watch a true crime documentary and this show is our favourite so far.

In each episode, a cop is telling the story of the worst crime he had to solve, while the case is being reconstructed in an event dramatisation.

The first reason why Real Detective is so good is because the stories themselves are very interesting to follow. The suspense is very well built, from the introduction to the conclusion, you wanna know who’s responsible for the murders.

The other reason is that, thanks to a huge budget, many of the episodes star actors who, if not famous, are excellent character actors that we’ve seen many times in many films and TV shows: Michael Madsen, Mia Kirshner, etc.

This makes Real Detective perhaps the most moving and interesting of any true crime documentaries shows on television nowadays.

AHS: Hotel

We’ve seen the last episode of American Story Hotel and it was amazing!

Lady Gaga was absolutely stunning as was the rest of the cast, but it’s Denis O’Hare that left us speechless. Liz Taylor is probably the most amazing character I’ve ever seen in any TV show.

As usual for AHS, the show is extremely eye candy, from the setting to the actors, it’s a real treat. Some scenes are incredibly powerful, like when vampires Lady Gaga (as The Countess) and Matt Bomer go on the hunt for victims on the song Tear You Apart (performed by She Wants Revenge).

AHS’s Hotel Cortez is widely inspired by the real Hotel Cecil. This is made clear from the fact that both the real and fictional hotel are based in Los Angeles to a specific episode named Devil’s Night, which features Richard Ramirez, a serial killer who stayed at the Cecil Hotel during his murder spree in the mid 1980s.

Much like the Cecil Hotel, AHS’s Hotel Cortez was the scene of countless deaths, including murders, suicides and accidental overdoses. While the Cecil wasn’t home to a murderous hotel owner ghost and a vampire Countess played by Lady Gaga, a lot of the deaths in Hotel reflected many of the real life deaths at the Cecil.

I wish that I could write a post that would reflect how much we’ve enjoyed each Friday evening spent watching this show… It was amazing in so many ways. Hotel is officially our second favourite AHS season, right after 1984 (which also features Richard Ramirez btw).

WTF happened to Legacies?

Ok, Legacies was never destined to leave a mark on television history but it was a good show to watch with our Saturday evening Spaghettis. A teen drama in a school for kids with special powers, that’s almost as perfect as Riverdale (sarcasm or not, you decide).

But what happened to the third season? Was there a cut in the budget? Were the writers depressed? From the first to the last episode, everything is horrible! The effects are kitsch, the story is… Well, there isn’t even a story to talk about and the cast isn’t charming anymore.

It would take a miracle for the show to get renewed after that. Sometimes, it’s merciful to take the beast down.

Mythic Quest

Of all the streaming services that we are subscribed to, Apple TV is probably the worst, in both quantity and quality. The App works fine, but the catalogue is filled with original content that really isn’t good. The fanboys will tell you that a few shows are worth watching, but certainly not worth a sub, not even at 7 euros.

Speaking about fanboys, well… We are both Apple fanboys! From the Airtag to the MacBook Pro, we have the entire ecosystem. This is probably the reason why we didn’t cancel our Apple One subscription yet, even though we only use Icloud and Apple Music.

Last week, after an argument on Reddit, I decided to try The Morning Show, it was boring (Jennifer Anniston is hard to look at with all the plastic surgery), and Ted Lasso is about soccer (I hate soccer). However, we’re having a blast with Mythic Quest, a TV show about a company developing an MMORPG. The cast is great, but the character that cracks us up the most is the “Lore” writer, CW Longbottom (portrayed by F. Murray Abraham).

Now, is a single show worth a subscription? No. Will we cancel our sub? No. It’s part of the Apple One bundle and we sold our souls to Apple long ago. At least, I don’t hide behind pretenses.

AHS: Freak Show

So far, Freak Show has been the AHS season that took the longest for us to watch. Not that we didn’t enjoy it, we just needed to find the right time to watch our weekly episode. Freak show isn’t for any time of the day, it’s not exactly the kind of thing to watch when you eat… So, late Friday night was our freak show time and we enjoyed it that way.

We both found this season heavier to watch, probably because watching human deformities for 50 minutes is something we’re less accustomed to than people getting slaughtered for 2 hours. I know, it’s weird.

However, the amazing casting, led by Jessica Lange brought an incredible level of quality to the entire show. Of course, Sarah Paulson is amazing and all the freaks were very convincing, but a difficult character like Dandy Mott is also perfectly portrayed by Finn Wittrock.

We particularly enjoyed the opening theme of the show and the stunning performance of Jessica Lange, singing a cover of David Bowie’s Life on Mars while the freaks run the set in the background.

So, it’s with mixed feelings that we move on to the next season. On one hand, we’re sad to leave behind those characters we’ve grown to love, but we’re also relieved to start a season that’s a bit lighter to watch.

Black Summer – Season 2

A mother and her daughter are trying to find safety in a world ravaged by a zombie apocalypse. (source: me)

This series is one of the best zombie TV shows I’ve ever watched. It’s fast and brutal but it’s also great at character development. Unlike The Walking Dead (which turned into utter crap), this show doesn’t rely on hours of useless dialogues to build its characters, it is mostly done through their actions.

Everything is on spot, the cinematography, the script, the constant feeling of impending doom. The zombies are only accessory to what’s really threatening: the human lack of trust and the focus on each individual’s own condition, regardless of other people’s lives.

Maybe should it have been titled “Black Winter”, since this second season mostly happens in the snow… It felt very refreshing since we watched it during one of the warmest day of this month of June.

Masters of the Universe: Revelation

I don’t often write about trailers or teasers but I got so excited with this one that I couldn’t keep myself from posting it. One of my favourite cartoons returns and they’ve used Bonnie Tyler – Holding Out For A Hero as soundtrack (which was also the soundtrack of one of my favourite 80s TV shows: Cover Up). It comes out in July, the timer is set!

AHS 1984

Every Friday night we watch an episode of American Horror Story, I already loved the TV-show, but 1984 is amazing! We’ve skipped a few seasons only to watch this one, and it was worth it. Weirdly enough, season 9 got a lot of bad reviews. In my opinion, it’s one of the best seasons with such an electrifying 80’s vibe, it makes you want to plunge into the Camp Redwood bloodbath.

While it doesn’t fail to capitalise on Camp Crystal Lake references, Jason Voorhees, or the notorious serial killer Richard Ramirez, the TV-show is full of 1980’s nostalgia with a compelling story that keeps you engaged. You have to hand it to the creators, they’ve got it all right, from the aerobics-scenes, to the music (Kajagoogoo, Billy Idol, Greg Kihn,…), the fashion,… it’s a straight trip down memory lane. The opening credits alone are worth the watch:

Also, the casting is as great as always, among my favourite characters this season: Matthew Morrison (Trevor), Emma Roberts (Brooke), Billie Lourd (Montana), and Zach Villa (Richard Ramirez). The scenes have enough gore and horror to keep any slasher fan entertained, and has a somewhat happy and satisfying end. AHS 1984 is an instant add to our regular rerun list, now I only have to find it on blu-ray and we’re all set.

Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel

The first time that I heard about the Elisa Lam case was during this documentary, and it was also the least interesting part to me. After having watched all 4 episodes, I still wonder though: was it really an accident, did she kill herself or did she get murdered anyway? I guess we’ll never know.

The most entertaining was the history about the Cecil Hotel. I never knew about its’ excistence, yet a lot of things have happened there throughout the years. The place even welcomed the famous serial killer, Richard Ramirez. After having watched “The Nightstalker”, he’s now mentioned in the “Cecil Hotel”, he seems to be in a lot of things lately, a new star is born? From what I’ve read and heard about this hotel, you don’t want to set a foot in that place. Also, the surrounding neighbourhood, Skid Row (wait, wasn’t this an 80’s rock band?), seems less than uninviting… where is the L.A. that everybody dreams about? The palm trees, the beaches, the beautiful people,… I guess that Hollywood has sold us a beautiful image.

I’ve also learned a new word while watching this docuseries: websleuth, apparently it’s an internet community that is focused on crime and missing people. Well, what can I say… I don’t know who to be more afraid of, them or the criminals? I previously called them the internet police, and to be honest  they seem way too obsessed with a girl they’ve never met, it’s just creepy. I mean, look at the black metal musician “Morbid”, he was falsly accused of her murder by these websleuths. They’ve shattered and destroyed his life, in my opinion, he is the true victim in this documentary. Yet, nobody ever apologized once for the injustice that was done to him.
