Radioactive Noodles

On Tuesday evening, Soforah and I normally have a few drinks and listen to music before eating pastas. For reasons that are mostly histamine related, we decided to quit drinking a week ago. So, instead of getting drunk, we ate homemade noodles while watching Mamytwink’s trip to Chernobyl, then we watched the first episode of the HBO TV show Chernobyl. It was a very nice evening. Big thanks to my wife for coming up with such a great plan, preparing the food and helping us keeping sober.

Tracking Quests Completion

Yesterday, while we were doing our dailies in Kul Tiras, Soforah couldn’t remember if she had already completed a quest that pops up when you kill some specific mobs. If you ever ask yourself the same question, there is a command line to check if a specfic quest has already been completed.

/script print(IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(50897))

You only need to replace “50897” by the number of the quest, which can be found on Wowhead. Simply search for the quest, then copy the number from the url:

If it returns false, you never completed it, while true means you already did.

New rigs

After a far too long break from PC gaming, we finally decided to build two new rigs…

For the build, we didn’t go overkill on the GPU, the price difference between an RTX 2070 and a 2080 ti was 1000,00€ per computer. Since 4k PC monitors with decent refresh rates aren’t within our reach yet, we targeted a gaming resolution of 1440p.

We went for an i9 9900k, since most of the bottlenecking in WoW comes from the CPU. It is also the first time that we used an AIO watercooler (Corsair h115i pro). It is incredibly more quiet and, so far, it seems to cool down the CPU very effectively.

We departed from the black Fractal case for something fancier: the NZXT H500. It is an amazing PC case with great cable management. The size and minimalist looks make it the perfect choice for our gaming space. Our desks are both 150cm wide and we didn’t want to be encased between two black blocks. Also, for years, I trusted the reviews about Fractal cases, but I never found the define models as silent as advertised, nor was the cable management that great. Actually, the H500 is even more silent and it doesn’t even use any damping material. I must admit that the use of PWM fans and a watercooler are probably responsible for the lower noise levels.

We took a few pictures during the process:

You can find the complete part list of the build on PCpartpicker.

Congratulations to Soforah for having participated to the assembly, she did an awesome job!

Building the Picade

I wanted to do it for a very long time and I finally did… I’ve built my very own Picade! I’ve done it while watching this video.

It took me two afternoons. The quality of the build is impressive, but what impressed me the most was the Raspberry Pi itself. It loads much faster than I expected and it is very easy to upload the roms wirelessly from my Mac via SMB.

Below is a small gallery of the building process. It starts with the frame and ends with the wiring.

I’d advise it to anyone who enjoys building things and playing retro games. Retropie doesn’t only emulates Mame roms, you can find the complete list of supported systems here. You don’t need any knowledge in electronics and no soldering is required. With a bit of logic, you can do anything.

Farewell, Telltale Games

When Soforah first read Telltale’s statement on Twitter, we couldn’t believe it. It was nearly bed time and we almost couldn’t sleep as we were baffled by this tragic news.

We’ve been playing Telltale games since the release of the first season of The Walking Dead and we were absolute fans of the style they had developed. We’ll always be grateful to Telltale for blowing back life into the adventure games genre.

Many of our holidays at home have been filled with their stories. We remember the laughs in Tales of the Borderlands and the Sundays with Game of Thrones, but it’s with The Walking Dead that we have the fondest memories. We’ve seen Clementine grow and become the badass she was in the last seasons and it greatly saddens us to think that we won’t get to see the end of her adventure. I highly recommend reading this Tweet from Melissa Hutchinson.

While we’re grateful to Telltale Games for all the fun they brought to us, we’re also really angry that their management took so many wrong decisions during the last years. All was fine when they had 3 or 4 franchises, and everything went to hell when they decided to spread their ressources between too many titles.

But what’s done is done. We just can’t believe that they didn’t know sooner that they were about to close the doors. The Walking Dead was the franchise that made them what they became and leaving the fans in the full middle of a season seems highly unethical to us.

So it’s with mixed feelings that we see Telltale go. Clem will always be hanging on our office wall, but it’s with sadness and bitterness that we’ll be looking at her…

The Package

When a bunch of teens go camping, one drunk dude cut off his own dick by accident. His friends have 24 hours to hike back to civilization and bring the missing body part to a hospital where it will be re-attached to its owner.

This movie is as dumb as its synopsis sounds, but we didn’t have a bad time watching it. Definitely not a good pick if you’re looking for something with depth.

Cargo

Warning, this movie isn’t so much about surviving a zombie apocalypse than it is about the fight between Aboriginals and evil white men. Seriously, the very few zombies we get to see are only there to give a flavor to the movie, while the real danger comes from the cruelty of a man (which becomes a tiring cliché).

Kudos to the movie for showing me my first Aboriginal zombie though… All in all, the movie isn’t too bad, just don’t watch it if you’re tired, you might not see the end.

Riverdale

Riverdale is not a town I’d like to live in, it’s filled with criminals, backstabbers and bullies. Yet, the comic book style of the show makes it very enjoyable to watch and it has filled many of our Saturday pasta evenings with joy and laughter… So, if I had to live in that town, what would be the things I would enjoy doing?

1. I wouldn’t get licked by Veronica (I’m happily married, you sick perverts!), but I would eat milkshakes until it runs out of my nose. Pop’s is the best place in the entire show.

2. I would join the South Side Snakes, their jacket is so cool. Seriously, I always wanted a perfecto but I could never find one that doesn’t look or too new or too cheap.

3. I would practice bow shooting with Cheryl Blossom. Not for Cheryl (again, I’m married!), but because bows are the only Dungeon & Dragons weapons that is a real thing in this world. Even though, I recently read that axe throwing is becoming a thing.

4. I would spend my days at the whyte wyrm, playing Mortal Kombat. I don’t know a single bar in my whole town with a MKII arcade cabinet anymore, or any arcade cabinet at all. It makes me sad.

5. I tried to find a fifth thing but I’m afraid I’ll have to leave it at four.

The Rain

A workmate advised me to watch The Rain. He told me that it was the “Swedish Walking Dead”. The next day, I told him that it was Danish, he answered “it’s the same”. He also thought that the girls weren’t cute, adding “they must have searched all the fjords to find them, because girls are all cute around there”. There aren’t many fjords in Denmark, I’m pretty sure he was talking about Norway… At that point, I can only hope that he was trolling me.

Super Dark Times

We’ve watched Super Dark Times yesterday evening and we had a super good time. The movie takes time to set up a disturbing ambiance, then moves to a powerful ending.

If I’d have to remember two things from the movie, the first one would be how frustrating it was to see Zach always so close to kiss Allison but never reaching her lips. It made me want to jump on Soforah and to kiss her furiously.

The second thing is the dialogue taking place in Meghan’s room. I’ve made a little collage to illustrate it:

Some things you should never say to a nerd with a sword…
