Diablo 2 Resurrected Saved the Week

E3 has come and gone. All over internet, gamers were going crazy with anticipation, begging for their yearly fix of hype. And, as usual, the developers threw us scraps. I went back to my cave with my tail shaking, but uncertain whether I should feel excited or disappointed. Between ridiculous announcements like Mario Rabid (lol) and a new BMX game from Ubisoft (there is still a public for that kind of crap in 2021? I’m baffled!), not much happened.

Starfield’s teaser looks good but I was more excited about the Elder Scrolls 6 Easter egg it contained. I’m also happy for Outer Worlds 2 but, once again, the trailer had absolutely no gameplay shooting.

Meanwhile, Blizzard revealed the release date of Diablo 2 Resurrected (23.09.2021). Finally, something concrete came out of that week.

Friday The 13th (1980)

Summer is here, the perfect time for a complete rerun of Friday the 13th… So, for more than 2 months, we’re going to rewatch a movie of the franchise every Saturday night. We started last week-end with the first instalment from 1980.

“In 1957, a young boy named Jason drowns in a lake near Camp Crystal Lake. The next year, two counselors are murdered. In 1980, a descendant of the original owners reopens Camp Crystal Lake with some counselors’ help. The counselors gets killed one by one by a mysterious person. This movie is a legend. It’s Friday the 13th before Jason Voorhees, it’s the first “ki ki ki ma ma ma”… After so many years of being a fan, I’ve just only read on Reddit that “ki ki ki ma ma ma” is meant to resemble Jason’s voice saying “kill kill kill, mom mom mom” in Mrs. Voorhees’ mind.

Even if the original Friday the 13th is not the first slasher ever made, since the movie is widely inspired by John Carpenter’s Halloween (and the movie Meatballs), it is the first slasher ever made where people get murdered while on vacations in the wild.

The movie nears perfection in many ways: the setting is amazing (Camp Crystal Lake, the first), the sex scenes, the booze, the stupid friend, the uninterrupted rhythm of the action, the absence of drama, the soundtrack, the amount of gore… In short, it is the perfect template for a slasher.

Friday the 13th is not only a genre defining movie, it is also at the top of our all-time favourite horror movies list.

It Happened In June

I totally agree with Isabelle, Soforah and I got married in June, 18 years ago. Time flies when you’re having fun! We didn’t have much of a celebration this year, with the Covid and all… But we’re almost fully vaccinated, one more month of patience and we’ll be able to go for one of the things we’ve been missing most: a Whopper. We’ll make it a celebration Whopper!

The Darkside Detective

Inge found this little gem on Steam and we had a lot of fun completing the first 6 cases. The bonus cases, however, were less logical and required to exhaust every dialogues and click several times on objects that unlock later in the story.

I love point-and-click games and their crazy sense of humour but I really don’t like when they stray too far from logic. Using a key on a lock to open a door is ok, giving a tinfoil hat to a monster so he feels protected from mind reading governments is ok, using a stick on a frog to unclog toilets to get a password easily gets tedious. So far, The Darkside Detective has managed to stay on the right side of this line. Let’s hope it’ll stay that way in the second chapter “A Fumble In The Dark” which we’ve already purchased and installed…

Alien Ranked

We’ve just completed a full rerun of the Alien collection. I’m not gonna write a review for each movie, I don’t think that I know enough superlatives to describe how much we love the franchise. Instead, here is our ranking from amazing to excellent:

  1. Alien: The original stays incredibly good, actually our favourite of the franchise;
  2. Aliens: Much more of an action movie with more guns and more jokes. While very entertaining, it has lost a bit of its mythical aspect compared to the first chapter;
  3. Prometheus: I know, the purists will go crazy, but we honestly think that Prometheus is an incredible movie and that it fits perfectly in the story;
  4. Covenant: That’s it, the purists will never come back to our blog now! Still, I can’t help to find the end of the story a perfect fit;
  5. Alien 3: Still excellent, but slower and darker. Enjoyable but not essential;
  6. Alien Resurrection: An excellent sci-fi movie and a great Alien movie, but it’s the one that we find less amazing, just excellent.

Army of the Dead

We already had to run away from zombies, hide from zombies and even fight zombies… However, making a heist in a zombie infested Vegas, that is new.

I don’t know if it’s because we went in without any expectations, but we enjoyed Army of the Dead. Once again, I don’t understand the bad reviews, what do people expect? It’s a zombie movie from the 2020 era, do people really watch such a movie for its depth and character development? Does such a thing even still exists in cinema nowadays?

Anyway, we had a great Saturday evening following Dave Bautista and his team. Clearly, it isn’t an original Romero, but it does a good job at keeping the pace and delivering a new experience in the franchise. It actually makes me wanna do a complete rerun of all the “of the Dead” movies, maybe an idea for this year’s Halloween (if we don’t all turn into zombies after the vaccination).

Wolf Creek 2 (2013)

While trying to help a girl who’s running away from a killer, a young guy has to fight (and eventually participate in a quiz) to survive.

This sequel may be more gore and more violent, but it is also less enjoyable than the original. There’s a lot of dialogues, too much for a high tension slasher.

Warning: Spoilers below!

A lot of scenes are really good, but the rhythm of the movie is broken during the quiz scene. It was a good idea, but it takes too long for the captive to only lose a finger. Also, the end is disappointing. Spending so much time to capture the victim, only to release him with a note “you lose”?! It’s as if a porn movie would stop right before the final scene.

All in all, not a bad horror movie, just a disappointing sequel.

Life Is Strange 2

We actually played this game a few weeks ago, but I kind of slacked with writing the post…

Being already fans of Telltale games and the two first Life is Strange, there was little doubts that we would enjoy this chapter. What I didn’t expect was to enjoy it this much, we both got hooked from the first minute. The journey of the Diaz brothers through a racist America was fantastic and filled with a lot of emotions. I know that these situations are made to provoke extreme reactions like injustice and anger but the result was an amazing journey where we met amazing and also horrible people.

Some episodes were a bit too hard on Sean though, I’m especially thinking about the fourth, which kinda filled me with a lot of frustration. Also, Daniel is a brat! Even at 9, I would have never acted half as selfishly as he did. If you think about it, everything wrong that has happened in the game, from start to end is the direct consequence of his actions. Never once does he think about his brother who’s constantly trying to protect him.

My favorite episodes are the first and the third. The first because I really didn’t expect things to turn out that way, we went in completely blind and got very surprised. The third episode introduced Cassidy which is probably the best thing that happened to Sean in the entire story.

If you play the game, you’ll probably notice the amazing soundtrack, but there’s one song in particular that we both enjoyed. In the first episode, when you visit Sean’s bedroom, you can listen to the music on his MP3 player, the song is titled “On The Flip of a Coin” by The Streets. It’ll forever be the song that will remind me of this beautiful moment.

Valheim: The Elder And A New House

We’ve both killed The Elder. The fight wasn’t really hard and we both killed him with a ton of fire arrows. Soforah had a bit more difficulties because her keybinds acted strange in the middle of the fight. Anyway, he’s dead and we’re getting ready to move on to the swamp.

Also, I’ve built a new house, mine was getting to small, especially with the fermenters and the upgraded forge. One of the greatest features of Valheim is physics. If you don’t pay attention to the way you build your fundations or your roof, everything could collapse. Since I’m not an architect (yet) or like my wife says: “you’re not Ted Mosby”, I’ve followed a great Youtube video from Zeroster. I am very happy with the result, it is cute inside and outside, very sturdy and it has a lot of storage space.

It is located in the meadows and I’ve surrounded it by a big moat, which resists the attacks of the trolls, the forest and the swamp. My next step is to find the perfect location for my future ship…
